What will be the impact of PADGETS?
We are expecting PADGETS to be extremely beneficial to public deliberation, citizen participation in the policy making process and decision support for policy makers.
PADGETS applications will allow non-technical users to deploy complex and layered policy queries/messages within Web 2.0 networks through established channels with significant user bases. By fully utilising the capabilities of modern user interactivity within social media, we intend to collect equally nuanced and complex feedback.
“Policy Gadgets” are a breakthrough approach to public discourse that will:
- …Provide easy and intuitive access to Web 2.0 media for communicating policy proposals and collecting feedback
- …Leverage the network effects of existing social media to involve users and online communities in the policy formulation process
- …Increase citizen trust and transparency through public and established social channels
- …Assist in forecasting public response and the impact of policy measures
Through this unique approach, we expect significant benefits for citizens and policy makers by complementing and promoting the democratic political process.
What will be the added value for citizens and for policy makers?
Information about current issues, as well as existing and planned responses to these issues, will become more accessible to citizens using the multimedia capabilities of the modern web. Furthermore, PADGETS will empower citizens to better participate in the decision making process and public deliberation of policies, by increasing the impact of their opinions while dramatically reducing the effort and cost of projecting them in the public sphere.
On the other hand, policy makers will be able to reach out to large segments of the body politic without the need of technically complex, specialised and cost/effort intensive solutions. Modern multimedia interfaces can elucidate complicated issues and policies while collecting valuable feedback from stakeholders.
This way, PADGETS applications will retrieve a much more complex, accurate, nuanced and representative feedback on existing or planned policies.
This feedback can be a critical factor in the decision making process, with the help of systematic analysis and decision support methodologies.
